Ricoh 8170 Settings - Configuring PaperStream Capture to Scan Trading Cards and Sports Cards

If you have a Windows computer and a Ricoh auto-feed scanner - like the fi-8170, we recommend using the Ricoh PaperStream Capture software to scan your cards.

Download Software / Open Settings

1. Go to the fi Series Software Downloads page. Select Series / Scanners / and Target OS.
2. Make sure to download and install both the software ("PaperStream Capture") and the drivers ("PaperStream IP (TWAIN)"). You do not need the "Pro" version of PSC.
3. Switch to Advanced Mode. Click on "Scan Settings" and then enter the settings exactly as listed below.

You'll use those settings for most of your cards. For Chrome / Holo, you can create a separate Settings Profile. More on that here.

Initial Settings:

1. Open PaperStream Capture.

2. Click Switch Modes to go to Advanced Mode.

3. Click the Scan Settings icon to open the settings window.

4. Scanner Driver Profile select 002: Color Default. (note, later you can save a new Scanner Driver Profile - for ex/ "005: Paper Cards", once you adjust the settings)

5. Set File Format to JPEG File (*.jpg)

6. Click the Options button: Format: JPEG, Compression Level: 4

7. Divide Documents: Divide documents into files, each consist of 1 pages.

Advanced Settings:

1. Document Counter: Start with 1, Minimum Digits 4, Reset after each batch.

2. Sheet Counter: Start with 1, Minimum Digits 4, Continue with each batch.

3. Page Counter: Start with 1 (This will increment for every card you scan over time. For ex/ if you have scanned 31619 cards, the next card will start with 31620.) Minimum Digits 4. Continue with each batch.

Click OK to save these settings. Now click the Scanner settings button.

• Paper Source: Feeder (Both Sides)

• Resolution: 400 dpi

• Paper Size: Custom (8.500 x 11.000 inch) (even though trading cards are smaller you use this size).

• Carrier Sheet: Off

• Front/Back Merging: Off

• Tone Adjustment: Automatic

• Color Adjustment:

  • Prioritize Color

    • Brightness: 160

    • Contrast: 220

    • Shadow: 20

    • Highlight: 255

    • Gamma: 1.5

• Cleanup: Off (Sharpness: None, Color Cleanup: None)

• Vertical Streaks Reduction: Off

  • Background: Black (if you have a lot of black border cards, you can later create a separate settings profile with Background: white)

• Rotation: 90 degrees clockwise (place your cards into the 8170 face down and horizontal rotated counter clockwise)

Quick test (recommended)

1. Save your settings

2. Put one card in the scanner. Click scan (front/back).

3. Confirm:

   • You’re getting duplex output (fronts and backs).

   • Cards are not cropped too tightly (the 2 mm margin should preserve edges).

   • Orientation is correct (rotation + fanfold).

Troubleshooting (common fixes)

• Cards are rotated wrong:
  Keep Flip Type = Fanfold, make sure you put your cards in face down and rotated counter-clockwise. 

• Edges are getting cut off:
  Increase Margin from 2 mm → 3 mm (still keep Output Size = Margin).

• Scanner is pulling multiple pages / misfeeding:
  Keep Pre-Pick = On, reduce stack size, and make sure cards are flat and not sticking (static + plastic sleeves can cause this).

• Colors look off:
  Confirm Prioritize Color and the exact slider values above. Also keep Cleanup settings at None.

• Images are not saving as JPG / JPEG
  Open Scan Settings. Under Output as a file, make sure Output as a file during a scan is checked and File Format is set to JPEG File (*.jpg). Then click OK and test 1 card.

• I do not see JPEG File (*.jpg) in the dropdown
  Under Scan, click Scanner settings... and make sure the profile is using Color or Grayscale, not Black & White / Binary. In PaperStream Capture, JPEG output is supported for gray and color modes, and changing image mode can also reset the output format, so check File Format again after making changes.

• My scanner settings look correct, but files still save as PDF
  The scan profile can be correct while the saved file type is still wrong. Open Scan Settings and confirm File Format is set to JPEG File (*.jpg). If you changed scanner/image settings, set it again before scanning.

• It still is not working
  Create a fresh scan profile, set File Format to JPEG File (*.jpg), click OK, and test 1 card. This usually fixes profiles where the output setting was reset during setup
